Jean Valjean (Liam Neeson) is a common man who wants to provide for his family. He steals a loaf of bread and is sent away to prison. There he meets Inspector Javert (Geoffrey Rush) who is threated by Valjean's inherent goodness when he is nothing but a criminal. Valjean is set free at the end of his term, takes on a new identity and builds a new life for himself. In one of his factories, he encounters Fantine (Uma Thurman). She is fired because of suspicions about her making money to send back to her child Cosette (Claire Danes). When Valjean discovers she was fired wrongly he finds her before Fantine dies only soon enough to promise to locate Cosette . Valjean raises Cosette as his own daugher but always in seclusion to avoid being discovered by the Javert who has made it his mission to locate Valjean and expose his criminal past. But Cosette meets and falls in love with Marius (Hans Matheson). As Javert closes in on Valjean, he realizes he cannot hurt Cosette and take her away from Marius. So Valjean risks everything for Cosette's happiness.
