Joanna Eberhart (Katherine Ross) and her husband Walter (Peter Masterson) move to the town of Stepford, Connecticut. Joanna immediately begins to find it strange that all the women in the neighborhood behave like stereotypical housewives. They only care about cleaning and making their husbands happy. Joanna does meet two other women who just moved to the area who behave normally, Bobbie (Paula Prentiss) and Charmaine (Tina Louise). However, both Bobbie and Charmaine suddenly begin acting like all the other women in the neighborhood, leading Joanna to believe that there is something dangerous going on.
