Gerry (Gerard Butler) and Holly (Hillary Swank) are happily married and living in Manhattan. When Gerry dies from a brain tumor Holly is naturally depressed and unhappy, but soon she starts to receive letters from Gerry. Before he died Gerry prepared several of these letters for Holly to give her instructions on how to make it through his passing and get on with a happy life. One of his instructions to her is to take a trip to Ireland with her friends and revisit the place where they met, on this trip she hooks up with Daniel Connelly (Harry Conick Jr.), a local pub singer. Along the journey the letters take her on, Holly is helped by her mother Patricia (Kathy Bates) and her friends John and Sharon (James Marsters and Gina Gershon) and Denise (Lisa Kudrow). Eventually, with the help of Gerry's love and his letters, Holly is able to find a happy new focus to her life.
