Growing up in a small steel mining town, Rudy (Sean Astin) was determined not to end up working steel like everyone else. As a child, he dreamed of playing football for Notre Dame, despite being told repeatedly he was too small. Even with poor grades and poor athletic skills, Rudy applies to Notre Dame, only to be rejected. After spending a year at another school working on his grades, Rudy is finally accepted into Notre Dame. Then he tries out for the football team, only to be told yet again he is too small to play. Driven by his dreams he tries out every year for the team and eventually his dreams come true.
